The house, originally called 'St Edmund's Hill', was designed by Robert Adam for John Symonds (1730-1807), Recorder of Bury and Professor of Modern History and Languages at Cambridge. The foundation stone was laid on 12th April 1773, a year before Adams' other Bury building, the Market Cross. The house was designed as a cube with an entrance on the south and a rounded two-storey bay on the west front (see 2252-6). A mid-19th century two-storey wing was added on the east side, with a Jacobean style staircase. The ground floor comprised Hall, Saloon and Dining Room , with Dining Room, two Bedrooms and a Chapel on the first floor . The name changed to Moreton Hall in August 1890. It has been a Roman Catholic Prep School since 1962. This image is of a first floor room .
